MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
The pandemic robbed many students of over a year of school. Right now, the nation is in turmoil over what direction it wants to go in, and leadership has degenerated into partisanship. Even if education is “back to normal,” students have missed out on vital socialization and relational growth and are still catching up in an atmosphere of fear.
The “Achievement Gap” has always been a huge obstacle to success for many students but add the pandemic and national discord and we find that many of our students are “5-9 months behind in Math, 6-11 months for lower income kids, and the same for reading, and 3 million students who just did now show up for virtual school.” That is how former education secretary Margaret Spellings described the crisis. She says what schools need is a triage system.
Project CHANGE has responded to this urgent need by recruiting a dedicated team of volunteers who seek to address these needs by mentoring those students who are struggling the most. As we start our recruitment for the coming service year, we appeal to you to spread the word about the opportunities with AmeriCorps to make a difference when it most counts.
